How To Install Impulse Sprinkler
Installing impact sprinklers is a methodical process that involves careful planning and precise execution. To begin, select the optimal location for the sprinkler based on the area you intend to irrigate. This decision should consider factors such as plant arrangement, water pressure, and coverage needs. Once you've determined the location, clear the surrounding area of any debris or obstacles that could interfere with the sprinkler's operation.
Begin the installation by assembling the impact sprinkler according to the manufacturer's instructions. Attach the appropriate nozzle and deflector plate to achieve the desired spray pattern and coverage area. To ensure a watertight seal, wrap Teflon tape around the threaded end of the sprinkler where it will connect to the water supply line.
With the sprinkler assembled, attach it securely to the top of a riser or stake. Take care not to over tighten, which could damage the threads. Connect the water supply line to the bottom of the riser or stake, using wrenches to ensure a tight and secure connection.
Once the physical components are in place, position the impact sprinkler at the desired height above the ground. This height can influence the reach and effectiveness of the water distribution. Impact vs Oscillating Sprinkler Systems




Typically, there are two sprinklers most commonly sold; Impact and Oscillating sprinklers. When researching to figure out which would be best for you and your yard, most articles list an overwhelming amount of pros and cons for each, but in the end, leave you still wondering which you should use. To make it easier, we came up with a few examples of which yards benefit most from which sprinkler type- or even a combination of both.
Impact Sprinkler
The impact sprinkler is a subset of rotary sprinklers; basically it just sprays water around in a circle. Using two arms, the main arm impacts the water stream and rotates the sprinkler around, whereas the smaller arm distributes this water closer to the base of the sprinkler.
Our Recommendation… If you have a yard with a lot of obstacles to spray around (trees, play sets, landscaping), this is the sprinkler we recommend, as it can better spray around those.
Oscillating Sprinklers
The oscillating sprinkler sprays water out in a fan–like pattern that can cover large areas with every pass. A main advantage of this sprinkler, is the way the water is pushed up and then down, very similar to rain.
Our Recommendation… If you have a rectangular shaped yard with no obstacles, we would recommend the oscillating sprinkler, as it will typically cover the whole yard if placed correctly. Also, if you have newly planted grass seed, this is the sprinkler to use. The pattern of the water sprinkling one spot then giving it a break before sprinkling again, allows time for the soil to soak up more water, rather than water pooling up and carrying your seeds away with it.
Maybe Use a Combo
If you find yourself still questioning which sprinkler to use, remember you can always use a combination of both. If your front yard is rectangular and open, but your back yard is covered in trees, use an oscillating in the front and an impact sprinkler in the back.
Efficiency is Key
Always, always place sprinklers where you will get the most efficiency out of them. If you notice your sidewalk is getting more water than your yard, move the sprinkler heads little-by-little until you find the correct placement for your yard. Keep in mind, all yards are different and need unique watering techniques and sprinkler options, so do some research in your lawn to figure out which is best for you.
Impact sprinkler heads sit on a rotating bearing, which allows them to pivot as water flows through them for full 360 degree coverage. If you want to tweak your impact sprinkler system to change the pressure, spray pattern, or arc of the water, there are several ways you can go about it. The simplest solution is to control the flow of water at its source. You can also adjust the different parts of the head, like the diffuser pin, movement collars, and deflector shield, to get just the right strength and trajectory.
Fine-Tuning Your Sprinkler Coverage
Adjust the flow of water at the source. The simplest way to change the amount of water coming out of your impact sprinkler is to tighten (clockwise) or loosen (counterclockwise) the hose faucet where it's hooked up. Opening the faucet to increase the water flow will increase the power and coverage of the stream, while decreasing the flow will confine the sprinkler coverage to a smaller area.
Use a lower water flow when you want to avoid damaging delicate plants, like flowers and leafy shrubs, with a forceful blast.
Change the position of the diffuser pin. The diffuser pin is a large screw anchored to the base of the sprinkler head. If you want to decrease the distance that your sprinkler covers, screw the pin in a clockwise direction until it sits over the water nozzle. For a more concentrated stream that will go further, unscrew the pin all the way or remove it entirely.
When inserted, the diffuser pin breaks up the stream, causing it to fan out in a delicate spray or mist.
The further the pin projects over the opening, the shorter and wider the spray will be.
Raise or lower the deflector shield. Swivel the flat metal square attached to the body of the sprayer head (just beside the diffuser pin) up or down. When the stream hits the downturned deflector shield, it will be redirected into a lower arc perfect for watering nearby plants and patches of grass.
If you're trying to water from one end of your lawn or garden to the other, keep the deflector shield up. This will allow the stream to travel in a higher arc and cover longer distances.
Use the friction collars to alter the spray pattern. Twist the metal clamps that wind around the base of the sprinkler head into different positions to determine the movement of the sprinkler head. The closer together the collars are, the narrower the watering range.
As the sprinkler turns, the wiry metal piece at the base of the head, known as the trip pin, will run up against the collar clamps, causing the sprinkler to reverse direction.
Make sure the trip pin stays within the range you want to set for the sprinkler. That way you can water the rose bushes outside your home without dousing the front porch or the garage door.
Flip up the trip pin for full 360 degree coverage. If you want the sprinkler to rotate all the way around, simply lift the trip pin until it rests up against the sprinkler head. It will then be able to send out water in a smooth, radial motion.
Getting the trip pin out of the way can be helpful if your sprinkler system is located in the center of the area you're watering.
Adjust the distance control dial. Some impact sprinkler models feature a separate dial that allows users to manually set the desired spray distance. If your sprinkler has one of these dials, turning it to the left will reduce the force of the stream, while turning it the right will pressurize it to send it further.
The approximate distances should be clearly labeled in feet or meters, making it easy to get just the right coverage.
Assuming your impact sprinkler doesn't have a distance control dial, you'll get the best custom spray by tinkering with the water pressure, diffuser pin, and deflector shield.
Choosing and Maintaining the Right Setup
Make sure you're using a water source with a pressure of at least 15 psi. Lower water pressures won't have the force needed to make an impact sprinkler system effective. If your sprinklers are falling short or don't seem to be putting out water at a very high rate, you may be better off with a different method of irrigation.
You can find out how many psi's you're working with by calling your local water provider or using a pressure gauge that fits over the end of a standard garden hose.
Most residential areas have an average water pressure somewhere between 40-60 psi. However, yours might be lower if you get your water from a pump or well.
Choose the right sprinkler head. Impact sprinkler heads are usually sold in a couple different materials—plastic and metal. Plastic heads are lightweight, making them easier to turn with a conservative water flow of around 20-40 psi. While they tend to be slightly more expensive, metal heads will be better able to handle the strain of higher pressures.
Metal sprinkler heads are also more durable, meaning they'll last longer and experience fewer issues.
If you're unsure which type of head will work best for your home, consult with a home improvement or gardening expert while you're shopping for an impact sprinkler system.
Clean your sprinkler periodically. A new sprinkler that has stopped performing to its usual standard may just be in need of a good cleaning. Remove the sprinkler head from the base and disassemble it to gain access to the nozzle and swivel bearing. Gently scrub each piece with hot water and a bottle brush to remove any debris or mineral buildup that may be inhibiting the sprinkler's movement.
Common symptoms of a dirty sprinkler include a weak stream with normal water pressure, turning to one side and stopping, and failing to rotate at all.
A mixture of vinegar and warm water can cut through heavy mineral and sediment deposits that have accumulated inside the sprinkler head.
Maintenance of Impulse Sprinkler
Clean the sprinkler regularly to remove dirt, debris, and mineral deposits that can clog the nozzle and affect water distribution.
Check seals and gaskets for signs of wear or damage. Replace any damaged components to prevent leaks.

Impulse Sprinkler - How Impact Rotors Work
This article explains what impact rotors are, how they works and where you can purchase them. Which came first: the lawn sprinkler or rain? Well, rain. Then lawn sprinklers. Well, no, I guess flooding and then maybe ditch irrigation and then someone poured water from a pot onto plants and never mind. I'll just skip ahead.
A Brief History
The impact rotor sprinkler was the first successful, efficient area sprinkler developed. The original design came about in 1933 from a farmer looking for a more efficient way to irrigate his citrus crop. Pouring water out of a pot just wasn't doing it. It would not be an exaggeration to say this sprinkler revolutionized agricultural irrigation and is still an integral part of irrigation today.
One of the indicators of a good design is to look at how much something has changed through the years. A 1925 pickup had a drop tail gate, stake pockets, leaf springs, and was available with an 8′bed and 1 ton rating. Sounds a lot like current pickups. If you saw the first impact sprinkler you would see that the design has changed little through the years. Arm still swings, it still rotates and it is still dependable. It would work fine today.
When Do Impact Rotors Work Best?
Impact rotors work best on large, open areas. Typical operating distances are from a low of 20′ up to 65′ in the residential applications and over 100′ in commercial uses. They provide consistent, dependable coverage with little maintenance required. Most give you rotation settings of a partial circle from 20° – 340° or full 360° coverage.
What are the main advantages? There are a couple and they are important. The first is that the water path is uninterrupted. On standard, non-popup, rotors it doesn't go through any filters or screens; it flows through just like the water from the end of a hose. This means the impact sprinkler is far less susceptible to clogging from debris. It also means there is very little risk of damage from grit and sand in the system. It just blows out.
About The Exposed Operating System
The second is the exposed operating mechanism. With more modern design popup rotors there is an internal gear drive mechanism. This is vulnerable to dirt or debris in the water and can cause the rotor to stop turning. At this point the rotor must be disassembled to clean. With the drive mechanism of the impact being 100% external and with no gears to worry about, the durability and long term performance of the unit is greatly enhanced.
Pop-Up Impact Rotor
One objection to impact sprinklers was their high visibility even when not being used. The Rain Bird Maxi-Paw acts as a pop-up, disappearing when not in use.
